Currently, the Town does not apply the $0.50 per month fee to commercial businesses to support the drop-off recycling center. Fees are applied to residential customers only. Recent events have highlighted both the high level of use by commercial businesses and the value of this service to the residents of the Town. There is a concern from staff that the fee could increase business usage (and costs) and in that event staff could potentially have to come back to the Board and ask for higher recycle fees. Staff advocates for covering the cost of recycling with fees and not subsidizing recycling since it is a part of our solid waste enterprise fund. It is important that we continue to provide adequate funding to keep the drop off center viable. Currently, we are operating at a deficit but rather than increase residential rates it makes more sense to apply a fee to our businesses in Town since many of them benefit from this service. This fee increase will provide $564 in additional revenue per year.
