Summary

                    AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49, relative to fraternities and sororities.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49, Chapter 7, Part 1, is amended by adding the following as a new section:

(a) Notwithstanding § 49-1-303, § 49-7-126, and § 49-7-2202(2), fraternities and sororities shall not be recognized or otherwise permitted to associate with, or operate on the campus of, any state institution of higher education.

                    (b) For purposes of this section:

(1) "Fraternities and sororities" does not include professional fraternities and honor societies; and (2) "Professional fraternities" means any local or national organization created for the primary purpose of promoting the interests of a particular profession and whose membership is limited to students studying in that particular field of professional education or study.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2018, the public welfare requiring it.
